Belsand in Sitamarhi district is one of the important towns of Bihar. The land of the region is fertile owing to the deposition of alluvium soil in the region. The agricultural possibilities are quite good because of this geographic location. The main market places of Belsand are located around the Chowraha and Kothi Bazaar. Chandauli, Bhorahar Mal and Kansar are important villages in the region. As per the census of 2001, the population of the town was 20566 people.

Belsand cordinates at 85.4°East and 26.45°North. The avg. elevation of the town is 180 feet (or 55 m). Belsand boasts some mansions (or Kothis) which date back to the British period and can be seen in ruins. The town is 22 kms away from Sitamarhi and is a flood prone town. Baghmati waters down the plains of Belsand.

Culture in Belsand

Chath Puja is the major festival of the town. A plethora of devotees offer their prayers to Sun (God). The festival is celebrated throughout the town and people prefer to rejoice the Puja in their own homes with their acquaintances and family. The other famous festivals of the town are Diwali, Dushehra and Holi. The locals celebrate these festivals with great fervor. Apart from these Saraswati Puja, Janmashtami, Naagpanchami, Eid and Makar Sankranti are also rejoiced with great zeal. 

Food in Belsand

Wheat, maize and rice are the main crops of Belsand. The town is also famous for producing tobacco, sugarcane and other kinds of cash crops. Sunflower, mustard and lentils are also cultivated in Belsand. The town is said to be the major producer of onion, cauliflower, potato, radish and many more vegetables.  The staple food of Belsand is “Khichdi”, a local dish made with lentils and rice and is flavored with spices. Kala Jamun and Chena Jalebi are among the most sought-after sweets of Belsand.    

Tourism in Belsand

Belsand is dotted with few sight-seeing places to offer its tourists.Shiv Mandir near Belsand ios frequted by tourists and loacls alike. This temple is located underground and is also well-known as “Damami Math”. This shrine is approximately 3 kms in the East of the town. People from the neighboring areas visit this sacred place every weekend. The temple has a peaceful environment. The local people believe that the Shivling of Shiva rose here automatically about 100 years back.    

Baba Kurwan Ali Shah Dargah: Every year on the 3rd and 4th April the yearly “Urs” is rejoiced. On this pious occasion the place is flocked by a myriad of people. Baba Ali Dargah is situated in the vicinity of Parrahi village and is approximately 2 kilometers in the South of the Belsand town.

Janki Temple: This pious place is about 22 kilometers away from Belsand. The temple lies in western part of Sitamarhi district and can be visited from Belsand. This hundred year old ancient temple is revered by the locals as well as outsiders. Tourists visiting Belsand must visit this shrine to gain tranquility. 

Punaura Dham: This place is situated at a distance of 20 kilometers from Belsand. This place is well-known as the birth place of Devi Sita(the wife of Ramchandra). According to the legends, King Janak once plowed the ground in the anticipation of rain, and while plowing the field he found a baby whom he adopted, raised as a princess and she was later known as Goddess Sita. The Govt. of Bihar has declared this place as a devout tourist spot.
